Spring Lambs

There was another entry of over 200 spring lambs forward, selling to another buoyant trade at Lancaster. There was an overall market average of 278p/kg achieved. Topping the trade today was Texel lambs from WN & D Smith of Cockerham selling to £136, weighing 44kg. This was closely followed by 45kg Suffolks from G & D Ball and Son of Great Eccleston selling to £134. Plenty of pens of good conformation lambs were still easily selling in excess of 300p/kg, topping at 320p/kg for Texels from A & E Clarkson of Thurnham.

Winner of this week’s £5 for the highest priced pen of 4 or less spring lambs went to WN & D Smith of Cockerham with Texel lambs to £136. The winner of the £10 for the highest priced pen of 5 or more lambs went to A & E Clarkson of Thurnham selling a pen of seven 40kg Texel lambs to £128. Don’t forget this competition is running throughout of the month of May.

Prime Hoggs

Another entry of 300 hoggs this week saw a very mixed entry forward. Well-fleshed finished hoggs were short in supply. Hoggs topped at £135 from GH Sanderson and Family of Catforth for heavy weight Texels. Hill bred hoggs topped at £125 for Cheviots from G Blackledge of Chorley. Hoggs sold to a top 260p/kg from AG Butler of Hambleton.

Hoggs required each week with a busy ring of active buyers looking for all specifications.

Cast Sheep

A larger entry of ewes today which were met by plenty of demand and selling well again. Topping the trade this week was a Teeswater tup from E & N Wright and Sons of Roeburndale East. This was closely followed by Cheviot Mule ewes from S Park of Aughton with plenty of ewes selling around the ninety pound mark. Mule ewes sold to a top of £85 from S Wilson and Son of Scotforth. A larger proportion of horned ewes in the market topped at £76 for Rough Fell ewes from SM & CM Bewley of Dent. Swaledale ewes sold to £68 from JC Morphet of Hale.
